PCT SOBO DAY 117 – Today was a bit boring
8th November 2016
Deep creek bridge - tent site
21.8 miles
4646ft up 1511ft down
I got going at 6 but Catwater was still in her tent running a bit behind schedule. It was cold by the river and I wanted to get into the sun to warm up. 13 miles to the last water before Big Bear so I decided to wait for her there.
The trail, I hate to say, was a bit boring today. There were no real views as we were in the trees a lot of the time. So I plugged myself into my podcasts and just kept going. I crossed a couple of creeks which both had logs to cross on and I was unsure of the direction of the trail a few times but that was as exciting as it got. It was a nice temperature all morning, then it got a bit hot for a couple of hours, but still only around 20°C / 68°F. How did I do this going north when it was so much hotter?!
I arrive at the water source and I choose between a trough with a few floaties in or a spigot which says for animals only. I chose the spigot. Actually I think the water probably comes from the same place anyway. I eat my bread and cheese and lie on the bench to wait. Catwater arrives an hour later and by the time she has filled up with 4 litres (I only take 2) and we have looked at campsites, I have now had a nice 1hr 20min break.
We carry on and the trail is still boring. I'm not even that inspired to take many pictures today. I plug myself in again and the next 7 miles goes by without me really noticing. As we round the corner Big Bear Lake comes into view. I get to the planned camp spot at 4 and Catwater comes along 15 minutes later. It's too early to camp so we go another 1.8 and set up camp before it gets dark. I'm in my tent by 4:50pm. I didn't want to carry too much water so I have a no cook dinner. Bread and cheese! After 4 days the bread is starting to get a bit dry and the cheese is a bit slimy so it's not at it's best, but I've eaten it all now so the questionable resupply choice did me alright. I am tempted to eat all my food for tomorrow now. I want to eat the cake and the Twix and the sweets but there are still 10 miles before town so I will need something. At least I'm not rolling into town with extra food this time.
